When selecting the right spray dryer, the key is to first identify the material characteristics, production capacity, and finished product requirements, and then match them with the appropriate model and configuration. The following are systematic guidelines for selection:

Step 1: Determine the Basic Configuration Based on Material Characteristics

This is the core prerequisite for selection; choosing incorrectly can directly lead to machine blockages, wall adhesion, or loss of activity: For heat-sensitive materials such as enzyme preparations or traditional Chinese medicine extracts, a low-temperature spray dryer must be selected, with an inlet air temperature capable of reaching as low as 35–100°C; models with instantaneous drying design should be prioritized; For materials containing organic solvents or flammable/explosive substances, a closed-loop system with explosion-proof features is mandatory, including nitrogen purging, oxygen content monitoring, and solvent condensation recovery; For high-viscosity materials containing crystalline particles, prioritize centrifugal atomization over pressure nozzles to prevent nozzle clogging, and include a pre-heated agitated buffer tank; For materials prone to sticking to the walls or absorbing moisture, standard equipment should include pneumatic tower wall vibration, a cold air jacket, and a dry powder recirculation system to minimize material buildup; For highly corrosive materials (strong acids or alkalis), material-contact parts must be made of 316L stainless steel, duplex steel, or fluorinated lining; standard 201/304 stainless steel is not acceptable.

Step 2: Determine Equipment Size Based on Production Capacity

Processing capacity requirements vary significantly across different production stages. For laboratory-scale pilot testing and R&D, select a small benchtop unit with a feed capacity of 0.5–5 L/h. Prioritize airflow or micro-centrifugal models, as their compact size is well-suited for laboratory settings and helps conserve precious samples; For pilot-scale prototyping or small-batch production, select a medium-sized unit with a feed capacity of 10–50 L/h. A medium-sized centrifugal spray dryer is generally suitable, as it can integrate with small-batch production lines; For large-scale industrial mass production, select a large-scale continuous production model with a feed capacity of 100 L/h or higher. Prioritize industrial-grade centrifugal or pressure-type equipment capable of 24-hour continuous operation.

Step 3: Determine the Atomization Method Based on Product Requirements

Different atomization methods directly affect the particle size and morphology of the final product: Centrifugal atomization is suitable for high-viscosity materials and applications requiring a broad particle size distribution. It offers high throughput and is easy to maintain, making it suitable for products such as milk powder, ceramic powder, and Chinese herbal extracts. The drawback is slightly higher energy consumption; Pressure atomization is suitable for materials with high solid content or applications requiring coarse particles. It features low energy consumption and uniform particle size, making it suitable for dyes and granulated products. The drawback is that nozzles wear out easily and require regular replacement; Airflow atomization is suitable for high-viscosity and fibrous materials, or small-batch heat-sensitive materials in laboratory settings. It can process hard-to-atomize materials such as traditional Chinese medicine extracts. The drawbacks are high energy consumption and a small batch size per run.

Step 4: Select a Supplier Based on Budget and Application

For R&D and prototyping only, high-quality domestic small-scale machines offer excellent value for money and fully meet experimental needs; for mass production integration into production lines, prioritize leading manufacturers in Hangzhou and Jiangsu, as they have experience with non-standard customization and provide more convenient after-sales support.
