Step 1: First, confirm whether the material type is suitable
Spray dryers are suitable for the vast majority of liquid materials, with only a few exceptions:
Suitable scenarios: Liquid materials such as solutions, emulsions, and suspensions, covering nearly all categories from food-grade milk powder and traditional Chinese medicine extracts to chemical catalysts and lithium battery raw materials. They are particularly suitable for drying heat-sensitive and easily oxidizable materials, as they can dry them instantly while preserving their activity.
Inapplicable scenarios: Materials with extremely high viscosity (paste-like and with very poor flowability), or those requiring a finished particle size larger than the standard 200 mesh, or where the final moisture content must be below 0.1%. In such cases, it is more cost-effective to switch to other drying equipment.
Step 2: Verify whether the material characteristics match the equipment configuration
Verify each core characteristic one by one; if all are met, the equipment is generally considered suitable:
Heat-sensitive materials: The equipment’s inlet air temperature can be stably controlled within the target low-temperature range (typically 35–100°C), with a drying residence time not exceeding 10 seconds; if this does not cause loss of activity, the equipment is suitable;
High-viscosity materials: If centrifugal or air-atomized nozzles are selected instead of pressure nozzles, and frequent clogging does not occur, the equipment is suitable;
Corrosive materials: If the materials of components in contact with the material (e.g., 316L stainless steel or fluorinated lining) can withstand the material’s corrosion and do not cause rust contamination, the equipment is suitable.
Step 3: Verify final suitability through small-scale trials—this is the most accurate method
Most reputable manufacturers offer free or paid pilot-scale services. Simply feed 5–10 kg of material into the machine for testing; verifying these three core results will allow you to make a final decision:
Examine finished product specifications: Post-drying moisture content, particle size distribution, and purity all meet your requirements;
Evaluate operational performance: The drying process should not involve frequent wall adhesion or material blockages, and the machine should be able to discharge material continuously and stably;
Assess product activity: The activity retention rate for heat-sensitive materials should meet standards, with no deterioration or discoloration occurring.
If all pilot test results meet the requirements, it indicates that the equipment is fully compatible with your material.
