Ammonium Sulfate Product Overview
Colorless crystals or white granules. Odorless. Decomposes above 280°C. Solubility in water: 70.6 g at 0°C, 103.8 g at 100°C. Insoluble in ethanol and acetone. The pH of a 0.1 mol/L aqueous solution is 5.5. Relative density: 1.77. Refractive index: 1.521. Low toxicity; LD₅₀ (rats, oral) is 3000 mg/kg. Irritating. Ammonium sulfate is primarily used as a fertilizer and is suitable for various soils and crops. It is also used in the textile, leather, and pharmaceutical industries.
Functions and Uses of Ammonium Sulfate
An excellent nitrogen fertilizer (commonly known as “field fertilizer powder”), suitable for general soils and crops. It promotes vigorous growth of branches and leaves, improves fruit quality and yield, and enhances crop resistance to disasters. It can be used as a base fertilizer, top dressing, or seed dressing; however, long-term use may lead to soil compaction. It can undergo a double decomposition reaction with table salt to produce ammonium chloride, react with aluminum sulfate to form ammonium alum, and be used with boric acid and other compounds to manufacture refractory materials. When added to electroplating solutions, it increases conductivity. It also serves as a catalyst for food coloring, a nitrogen source for cultivating yeast in fresh yeast production, a dyeing auxiliary for acid dyes, and a leather degreasing agent. Additionally, it is used in beer brewing, chemical reagents, and battery production. Another important application is in rare earth mining, where ammonium sulfate serves as a raw material. Using ion exchange, rare earth elements are extracted from the ore, and the leachate is collected, simply filtered, and dried to produce rare earth concentrate. Approximately 5 tons of ammonium sulfate are required to produce 1 ton of rare earth concentrate.
Working Principle of the High-Efficiency Fluidized Bed Dryer for Ammonium Sulfate
After being heated and purified, air is drawn in from the bottom by an induced draft fan and passes through the perforated plate of the hopper. Inside the working chamber, the material is fluidized through agitation and negative pressure. Moisture evaporates rapidly and is carried away with the exhaust gas, resulting in rapid drying of the material.
Applications of the High-Efficiency Fluidized Bed Dryer
Mechanically extruded screw-pressed pellets, oscillating pellets, and wet high-speed mixed granules; drying of wet granules and powdered materials in the pharmaceutical, food, feed, and chemical industries; large granules, small lumps, and sticky lumpy materials; materials that undergo volume changes during drying, such as konjac.
